After more than a decade and over 150 Joomla themes delivered to 25,000+ customers, we made a bold move: switching our platform from Joomla to Shopify.
Why we decided to move away from Joomla
There were two main reasons for this decision:
- A need for creative inspiration. While we loved crafting unique Joomla themes for a wide range of industries, the process became repetitive. We wanted a new challenge to reignite our creativity.
- Joomla’s declining popularity. Google Trends shows Joomla peaked around 2010 and has steadily declined since. We believe this is due to slow updates, lack of innovation, and the non-profit nature of the project, which limits resources and progress.
Despite its challenges, we appreciated Joomla’s extensibility and simplicity. It was easy for newcomers and powerful for advanced users.
Why we chose Shopify over other platforms
Shopify stood out for three key reasons:
- Self-hosted simplicity. No server setup or maintenance—Shopify handles hosting, security, and performance, making it ideal for users of all skill levels.
- Constant innovation. Shopify is always growing, with frequent updates, new features, and a vision to lead global e-commerce. Their Live View Reporting tool and capital programs are just a few examples.
- A complete e-commerce solution. Shopify offers multiple sales channels (online store, POS, Buy Button, social media), plus built-in marketing, SEO, and analytics tools.
Compared to Joomla and WordPress, Shopify’s growth is clear. During the 2020 Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, Shopify stores generated $5.1 billion in revenue—a 76% increase from the previous year.
